Also known as glucitol, sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that is slowly metabolized by the body. Uses: In “sugar-free” mints and cough syrups, a sugar substitute often used in diet foods and sugar-free chewing gum, used in bacterial culture, in cosmetics as a humectant and thickener, in mouthwashes and toothpaste, and as an amateur solid rocket fuel when mixed with potassium nitrate.
